Online short courses

Central Saint Martins offers a wide range of real-time teaching, online short courses in Art, Business Skills, Fashion, Graphic Design, Photography, Portfolio Preparation, Textiles and 3D.

Live classes allow students to share and receive feedback on their creative practical work and weekly assignments. An online forum enables discussion beyond the live classes between students, allowing for course content review and uploading of assignments to a personal cloud space; students can also access an archive of their course sessions for up to three months after the course ends.

What You Will Need

To participate in a live online short course, and in addition to the materials list specific to the short course you choose, you will also need the following essentials to get connected:

  • A microphone and a pair of headphones; smartphone headphones with a built in microphone work perfectly. A webcam is not essential but will enhance the experience.
  • The latest version of Java on your Mac or PC (smartphones and tablets can be used but can have some restrictions during the live classes).
  • A recently updated browser like Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari.
  • A good broadband connection is essential! If you are using a smartphone or tablet, please ensure you are using a strong Wi-Fi connection and are not relying on data services.

Tools And Platforms

Central Saint Martins uses a number of tools which students will need to familiarise themselves with for an online course, some of which have been specifically customised for individual courses.

Blackboard Collaborate . An online classroom platform where tutors will deliver interactive lectures over video, supported by an electronic whiteboard. Students will be able to interact with the tutors and other students by video, talking and messaging here.

Workflow . UAL’s customised version of the Mahara electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) tool. Workflow is available to students before and after classes, to support learning and development. Workflow will contain additional learning resources such as videos, research, industry case studies and a news feed. Recordings of the live classroom sessions will also be available in here, in case a lesson has been missed or if student would like to watch one again. Workflow is also a space for students to upload homework assignments and communicate with other students between classes.
